Turkey has achieved a major milestone in the field of solar energy. The installed solar energy capacity has exceeded 12,000 megawatts (MW) for the first time, reaching 12,425 MW. At the same time, the share of renewable energy in electricity generation has been above 51% for the past two months.
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar emphasized that renewable energy will be the key to Turkey’s energy independence, stating that they aim to increase installed capacity by 5,000 MW annually until 2035.
Turkey’s installed solar energy capacity has exceeded 12,000 MW!
Renewable energy plays a critical role in meeting Turkey’s energy needs sustainably, increasing energy independence, and achieving climate change mitigation goals. Once reliant on hydraulic energy, Turkey’s renewable energy structure has now shifted towards sources like solar and wind power.
As of the end of 2023, the installed solar energy capacity was 11,316 MW, which has now surpassed 12,000 MW to reach 12,425 MW in just two months. This represents nearly half of the increase recorded in 2023 by the end of February alone.
Additionally, the share of renewable energy in electricity generation was 51.63% and 51.03% in January and February respectively, demonstrating its significant contribution to electricity generation.
As Minister Bayraktar highlighted, Turkey has achieved a significant share of electricity production from renewable energy sources. The goal is to increase the share of renewable energy in production to 55% by 2035, with steady progress being made towards this target.
The Minister stated that they aim to increase installed capacity by 5,000 MW annually until 2035, with 3,500 MW from solar energy and 1,500 MW from wind energy each year. Over the next 12 years, they aim to reach a total of 60,000 MW of new installed capacity.
